Know Some More about our Parliament

Parliament is known as the supreme legislative body of India and the Indian Parliament in total is comprised of the President along with the two Houses-Lok Sabha which is the House of the People and Rajya Sabha that is Council of States. The President also has the power of summoning and proroguing either House of Parliament or of dissolving Lok Sabha.

The Constitution of India earlier had come into force on January 26, 1950. However, the first general elections took place under the new Constitution in the year 1951-52 and also the first elected Parliament came into being in the time of April, 1952.

Rajya Sabha

Among the two houses one is Rajya sabha and the origin of it can be traced back to 1919, at the time when in pursuance to the Government of India Act, 1919, another second chamber regarded as the Council of States was formed and created. The Rajya Sabha consists of not more than 250 number members out of which 238 members representing the States and Union Territories, and rest 12 members nominated by the President.

Lok Sabha

Other house is Lok sabha, Parliamentary institutions in our country, with all their modern ramifications; owe its origin of India's British connections. Until the year 1853, there was no legislative body found which was distinct from the Executive. The Charter Act of 1853, bring for the first time some kind of a legislature in the state of a 12 member Legislative Council. The Indian Independence Act of year 1947 also declared the Constituent Assembly of India for becoming a full sovereign body.
