The main objective of basketball is to throw the ball into a hoop to earn points. The game is played out on a rectangular court and depending on which section of court you successfully throw a ball into the basket and thee winning depends on how many points are scored. The ball can be moved around the by dribbling or passing the ball. At the end of the game the team with the most points is declared the winner.
Each team in the game is made up of 12 players in which only 5 are allowed on the court at any time. The Basketball court is rectangular in shape and measures 91 feet long and 50 feet wide. There is a halfway line in which a small circle is found in the centre; this is where the game starts with a tip off (the ball is thrown in the air by the referee and a player from each team tries to gain possession for their team). At each end of the court there are two baskets both 10 feet in height. A three point arc is the outside ring, whilst in the middle is the key that includes a free throw line.
Here are some rules that Naismith included with his game.
• The basketball should be held between the hands, without the involvement arms or body to hold it.
• Players are not supposed to strike, push, hold, or shoulder their opponent. If they found doing this, it would be considered a foul.
• Two fouls can disqualify a player until the next basket was made without substitution.
• An attempt to injure an opponent will also disqualify the player from the game.
• Striking the ball with clutch will be considered as foul.
• A goal will be counted against a team committing three consecutive fouls.
• A goal can be counted only if the ball stayed in the basket but If it bounced out, the goal will not counted.
• Umpires can throw the ball into play if no one knew who had lost it out of bounds. They are also responsible for keeping track of fouls and scoring.
• Each half was of 15 minutes and the side with the maximum points would win the game.
The basketball game has come a long way from the time of invention, and is still holding onto some of its roots. This is just one reason of many why this game continues to be so popular around the world.
