Mario Risso; U.S Power Lifting Nationals

The United States Powerlifting Association or USPA is the leading powerlifting association in the United States. There is a distinct difference between Weightlifting and Powerlifting. Weightlifting is a sport made up of two lifts: the snatch and the Clean-and -Jerk, where the person lifts the weight above the head, while in Powerlifting there are three lifts; the Squat, Bench Press and the Deadlift.

The Powerlifting competitions of either one two or all three of these lifting disciplines. The categories of athletes are chosen by age, sex and body weight. Each competitor is allowed 3 attempts at each lift and the best lift in each discipline is added to their total. The athlete with the highest total is declared the winner. In case, more than one athlete achieves the same total, the athlete with the lightest body weight is considered the winner. This year one of the premier events will be held in Las Vegas, Nevada. This time there are six weight lifters from New Mexico. A pair coming from Rio Rancho, 37 year old Mario Risso and 44 year old Donald " Eagle" Williams. Mario Risso is a native of Calif and has been living in Rio Rancho for the past 11 years. He is a paramedic training captain working with the Santa Fe Fire Department. He also holds has won several New Mexico records in different age and weight groups. Risso will be competing in the 275-pound raw open class in the full category powerlifting which consists of all the three disciplines, the squat, the bench Press and the deadlift.
