Maths Is Still A Problem For Hyderabad Class 10 Students

A survey by National Council of Educational Research and Training revealed that Maths is the weakest link for Class 10 students. The NCERT published district report card that included academic performances of class 10th students in five subjects namely science, social science, english, modern Indian languages and maths. A total of 2525 students were evaluated from 80 private and government schools from the city of Hyderabad. The reports revealed that 59.32% students answered less than 35% questions correctly. These students were at risk of learning capabilities in the subject of maths. 40.7% students from government schools could solve math problems as compared to 37.33% students from private schools. Students were examined on topics like algebra, number system, trigonometry, mensuration, probability on maths etc.

Only 42.33% answered questions that were related to trigonometry correctly. Only 34.73% questions related to coordinate geometry were answered correctly. Some of the teachers have attributed poor performance to be a result of continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE). Before the CCE was introduced, students knew the questions were going to come from the textbook. After CCE, difficulty increased as it was based more on concept based learning. Therefore, students who do not follow concept learning or practice in a regular manner fail to achieve success.
