National Education Policy May Be Delayed For 4th Time Since Announcement

The government-appointed committee for the National Education Policy (NEP) has received another extension till October 2018. These will most likely delay the NEP for the fourth time since it was first announced. The committee is headed by chief K Kasturirangan, former Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief. The panel was set up in June of 2017 by Union Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry. The report was due to be submitted by Dec'17 but an extension was given till March 18. Then another extension was announced till August. And it is now extended for another two months till October.

A senior HRD official said that it was felt more consultation was needed for the policy with the states and education ministers. The basic plan has been done but the committee is due to have consultations with various experts, stakeholders etc. This is why an extension has been provided. Apart from the former ISRO chief, the committee has 8 members including mathematician Manjul Bhargava.

According to people who are familiar with the policy, the suggestions might not be included during this academic year as the session for schools have started in April and colleges have started in June/July. There are a number of policy decisions that have been taken which will come into effect the next academic year, said HRD official.
