In March, the revised textbook will hit the shelves before the new session. It’s not clear yet that whether any existing content has been removed or any other content has been added for the accommodation of the new poem.
Introduced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT), this poem by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is added in a Class VIIIth Hindi textbook after it was advised by the government for exploring ways of immortalizing his contributions and achievements.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s poem “Kadam Milakar Chalna Hoga (We Have To Walk Together)” is now a part of the Hindi textbook, Vasant. Vasant is the book which carries essays, poems and short stories by renowned writers like Ramdhari Singh Dinkar, Hazari Prasad Dwivedi, Harishankar Parsai, Suryakant Tripathi ‘Nirala’, and Ismat Chughtai. This poem by Vajpayee Ji is an appeal to countrymen to walk together, irrespective of difficulties and hurdles, for a better and bright tomorrow.
Atal Bihari Vajpayee died on 16th August last year. Since his death, the Centre and BJP governments in the states have commemorated his memory by naming various schemes after him.
The Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry, as part of this effort, had asked NCERT for exploring the inclusion of achievements which are associated with Vajpayee’s years of prime ministership. Till then, Vajpayee was only mentioned in the 8th class Political Science textbook, Politics in India Since Independence. The NCERT then has decided to introduce his poem as a part of its ongoing revision of textbooks.
The textbook is revised for the second time and is undertaken under this government. Under the first exercise in 2017, NCERT made approx 1,334 changes, including various additions, corrections, and updates of data in 182 textbooks. The second revision is aimed at rationalizing curriculum for reducing the burden on students. Vajpayee’s poem has been introduced as part of this exercise.
His famous poem ‘Kadam Milakar Chalna Hoga’ (We have to walk together) has been introduced in class 8th textbook by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) in a bid to forever immortalize the endless contributions and achievements of late Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. With the help of this poem, the poet makes an appeal to all its countrymen which states that irrespective of all the difficulties and hurdles that come in our way we all should walk together for a better and bright tomorrow.
