New Elective Subject Introduced in Classes 8,9 and 10

As the world is progressing, technological advancements are on the rise. Artificial Intelligence is playing a major role in the development of the present world. With an aim to make the students well aware with the latest technology, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce a new elective subject i.e. artificial intelligence. Recently a meeting of the CBSE Board’s governing body was held wherein this key decision was taken. This subject is going to be introduced as a skill subject for classes 8^th, 9^th and 10^th.

Artificial intelligence (AI), also called as machine intelligence, is the intelligence demonstrated by machines, in addition to the natural intelligence displayed by humans and other animals. In simple language, it is the capability of a machine to act much like a human being. It is the ability of the machine to think, learn and perform other tasks that usually require human intelligence such as visual perception, speech recognition and decision-making skills. Some examples could be: playing chess; operating cars etc. Since, technologies like artificial intelligence, big data and data analytics is making a great impact on the world today, it is important that the students must be made aware about these. Resultantly CBSE has decided to update its curriculum by adding the elective subject of artificial intelligence for classes 8^th, 9^th and 10^th. The syllabus will be drafted accordingly for the three classes. Alongside, CBSE shall also offer provide help in the capacity building of the schools with respect to teaching and learning of the new subject. This concept is a result of session held at NITI Aayog recently. The CBSE consists of nearly 20,299 schools in India and 220 schools in 25 other countries affiliated to it. Another big change that the CBSE has introduced is with respect to the mathematics question paper for class 10^th. From the next academic session, 2 question papers shall be prepared for Maths, one easy and one slightly difficult. The students who do not wish to opt for mathematics in their higher education, can chose the easier question paper. Such students also have the option of choosing applied mathematics in classes 11 and 12. As far as the decision of including artificial intelligence in the curriculum is concerned, eminent educationist and principal of the Springdales School in Delhi Ms. Ameeta Mulla Wattal commented that this inclusion is a wonderful step because the future lies in artificial intelligence. Also, as the technology is playing a great role in our lives, it has been extremely crucial to make the students aware about it.
