PARENTS, TAKE THE TIME!
Editorials News | Jan-18-2017
The National Parenting Support Commission (NPSC) developed a parenting assessment tool to which is proving that poor parenting is responsible for numerous behavioral problems in children. Dr. Patrece Charles Freeman, NPSC’s executive director said that as per the data, many parents "are not creating structures at home for their children, they are not very involved in the lives of their children, and it is demonstrating that parents are not nurturing their children".
They found that more than 52 percent of parents use the authoritarian and manipulative style; and 63 percent used an aggressive and critical parenting style. So, NPSC seeks to create awareness on the four different effective parenting elements including structure, nurturance, empowerment, and recognition.
Initiatives like ‘Parents, Take the Time campaign’ have been taken by the Commission. These educate parents on the critical role they play in the development of their children. Research says that children who enjoy parental interest and support perform better academically.
Parents are encouraged to invest time in helping their children with their homework, in setting up a home routine for them, in saying ‘I love you’ to them, in hugging them, and in keeping in touch with their teachers.
