Privileged: Time to Unlearn

Growing up in an atmosphere of affluence and security can connote various psychosocial risks. We mostly associate the underprivileged with troubled life. However, there is a different picture all together of the affluent and secured children. It has been found that the upper-class children have manifestations of elevated disturbances in several areas such as substance abuse. These youngsters reported significantly higher dependency on cigarettes, alcohol etc. They also suffer from anxiety and depression. Mostly for children who grow up in a secured and pampered environment adjustment is a major issue and they become more prone to depression if there happens to be a change in their lifestyle that is challenging. Their mental ability to face tough challenges is much lesser than those who come from under-privileged backgrounds.

It is very easy to get used to a comfortable lifestyle but it is also equally difficult to adjust in absence of the same. There is no end to human wants and it is blatantly evident when you look at today’s youth. With ever changing technology the wants and needs of the children of the affluent are ever increasing. Children are becoming more and more materialistic and the feeling of contentment seems to be depreciating fast.

On the other hand children growing up in less privileged environment are mentally very tough. They have developed this amazing ability to create and recreate solutions to meet the challenges that life throws at them at every bend. Unlike the privileged whose lives are pretty much micromanaged, these under-privileged children are more adept at solving problems, navigating the world independently and the most importantly bouncing back even after experiencing failure. The grit, resilience and the perseverance are traits of a successful people.
