Rain Intensity to Increase Due to Climate Change

As stated according to a new research, rise in temperature due to climate change is likely to boost monsoon depression over India. Due to this there will be an increase in the intensity of extreme rainfall events this monsoon.

According to the recent data from the European Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecast, the level of relative humidity in the mid-troposphere has increased approximately to 2 per cent over the sub-continent in last 39 years. The chances are it will lead to increase in extreme rainfall events over the Central India. There are various clear evidences that moisture is going to increase over the Indian region and along with it the water holding capacity of the air will also increase as warmer air holds more moisture. As to examine the impact on monsoon depression a climate change surrogate experiments were conducted and the results were that intense monsoon depression will occur in near future over India. “The atmosphere is getting much warmer due to cloud heating. When the cloud condenses over atmosphere, it releases heat. When that heat becomes stronger, it creates a low pressure, against the bottom layer, which shows high pressure and this creates a gradient. The vertical motion becomes stronger, the storm intensifies, which also sustains depression in a more intense way,” said Mr. Sanjay Pattnaik who is the lead author from IIT Bhubaneswar.
