Revised Handball Rules Will Be Passed Next Week

Soccer’s law-making body IFAB (International Football Association Board) will be revising rules of handball next week. This is done to clarify some of the debatable rules in handball. This will reduce the 'grey areas' in the game, said technical director David Elleray.

IFAB has been in talks regarding the matter since November. They want to reach an agreement on the game rules as it has now become a necessity. The rules should be more precise and detailed for various types of handball offences. The revised rules are scheduled to be passed at IFAB's meeting in Aberdeen on 2nd of March.

"The new text will clarify those situations where players can expect contact with the arms to be penalised and where they can expect not to be penalised", said Elleray.

The comments from the director follow the Manchester City's 3-2 Champions League win at Schelkay on 27th of February. During the game, video assistant referee awarded a penalty against Nicolas Otamendi even though the Manchester City defender was just trying to get his arm out of the way.

Through the discussion, IFAB is hoping to notably reduce the grey areas around handball. We will be recognising the areas where non-deliberate contact should be penalised and when it shouldn't be.

There will be a reference to deliberate handball - but that's something no discussion can be done without. Any deliberate handball has to be penalised in every situation.
