Safeguard People from Water Pipe – Repair Methods

Methods to repair sewer, storm – water and drinking water pipes lead to release of harmful materials which may pose health risks. A study is being done on these methods to find out safer solutions for workers and public.

Andre Whelton, an assistant professor in Prude University’s Lyles School of Civil Engineering and the Environmental and Ecological Engineering Program said that the CIPP (cured-in-place pipe repair) process emits chemicals into air. It can expose workers and public to harmful compounds that are hazardous to their health. Whelton suggested that workers should always wear chemically resistant gloves while handling uncured resin tubes.

He also added that health officials must very vigilant when people complain about any odor around CIPP sites. It will help them with their investigations. Also, the health departments at local and state level should involve themselves in all public chemical exposure and illness complaints. Engineers are also responsible towards safety, health and welfare of public.
