A science magazine in China published a report based on new species of Gibbons who were extinct long back and now have been discovered in a 2200 old tomb in Xi’an which a province in Western China. A team of Chinese and UK scientists participated in the excavation and the head of the archaeological team, Zhang Tian’en told that unearthing lasted from 2004 to 2008 and there were other substantial skeletons found as well.
The reports say that the animals were caged before they were buried and a bear who was chained. Most probably, it is believed that the animals were kept as pets when they were on the planet.
Scientists have confirmed the skeletons to be of a gibbon but earlier were unable to find the specific genus. This research was done under the collaboration between SPIA and UK scientists in 2012 and finally in 2018, they were successful in discovering a completely new specie.
The name of the species was Junzi imperialis. The scientists told that confirming the new species is just a beginning to this research, they will further conduct a DNA research to identify its relation to the gibbons of the modern world.
