Editorials News | Sep-13-2017
Due to consistent social pressure to raise a perfect, well – behaved and an accomplished child, most of the parents feel to be in “fix-it” mode all the time. The psychologist Lea Waters emphasized on what children perform well helps them to behave better and helps parents as well. She told that her research work implements a powerful, positive strategy which is called “strength-based parenting”.
It is very helpful for children to improve by focusing on their strengths. The strength is not only about what your child is good at. Psychologists have proposed three characteristics of strength. These are what your child does it well (high performance), happily (high energy) and often (high use). Then, the strengths are categorized into talent-based (sports or art) or character-based (humor or kindness). Maximum of schools are teaching children about their strengths. A study was conducted on more than 300 secondary school students in UK. The study was published in the Journal of Positive Psychology in 2011. The study showed teenagers who were taught about their strengths received greater life satisfactions than their peers who did not.
