The Best Way To Learn Maths Is Your Hands
Editorials News | Jul-24-2018
Different people perceive maths in separate ways. But, creative teachers are trying to find the divide between professional mathematicians and general population to develop a more holistic understanding for the subject. Sara Jensen, a Carthage College math professor said that most people hate maths because they do not know how to think about it. Hands do play a role in understanding things and imaginative teachers are helping the students to make math more accessible by helping to break mental barrier around the subject.
A University of Chicago study published in Psychological Science in 2014 found that hand gestures raised understanding of maths among young kids. The researchers concluded that children who use hand as gestures during their maths lessons develop a much deeper understanding of the subjects than those who don't. The understanding was even more than kids who interacted with the numbers physically on the magnetised board.
The kids who do hand gestures not only understand how to do maths but also understood the underlying concepts behind the problems. They also had a profound and flexible comprehension of instructions they apply for math problems. Math is an important part of student life which most kids avoid rather than understand. Now, maths teachers are showing students how maths can be a practicals, hands-on approach.
