The Government Of Delhi Wants To End Two Shifts In Schools
Editorials News | Apr-26-2019
Currently, the government of Delhi operates 1,027 schools of 700 buildings throughout the city in double shifts: one school operates in the morning shift and another, usually a boys' school, in the evening.
With 30 new school buildings in the pipeline, the Department of Education of the Delhi government plans to do away with double-shift schools.
Currently, the government of Delhi operates 1,027 schools of 700 buildings throughout the city in double shifts: one school operates on the morning shift and another, usually a school for children, at night. The hours of the double shift schools are half an hour less than those of the single shift schools.
In recent months, the construction of 11,000 new classrooms has been focused on existing school buildings. Now, land has been identified and acquired for 30 new school buildings, of which estimates have been sent for 24.
"At the beginning, the construction of classrooms had been the priority to resolve the situation in schools where the student-teacher ratio was unfavorable, in some cases, with one teacher for every 50 students. But with the construction of new schools, the goal is eventually to move the double shift schools of a single building and turn them into a single shift. Running double-shift schools is not something that can be done academically, "said an education department official.
According to education department officials, the main advantage of creating single-shift schools will be "a better use of time and space."
"After the classes conclude in the afternoon, school facilities can be used for sports and extracurricular activities. The hope is also to be able to introduce professional training programs in the premises in the evenings, "said one official.
Officials said the priority areas for new school buildings are densely populated areas of the city such as the Northeast district, where multiple schools have more than 2,000 students each shift.
Construction work will be sanctioned after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted.
