To Sir With Love

Whenever we think of how a teacher should be the first images that often flash across our mind is that of E.R Braith waite, the teacher in the classic film "To Sir with Love". This movie is a stirring tribute to the powerful relationships between teachers and students. It also portrays how important it is for a teacher to be able to recognize the inherent and equal value of every individual. Apart from just bookish knowledge it is very important for teachers to be dynamic in order to capture the attention of the students, make study interesting,interactive so that the students do not get bored. It has always been seen that students always like teachers who are funny, not overlystrict, who give work which are easy and also are ready to help thestudents who are struggling. It is very important for teachers to be approachable, because after parents it is teachers that growing youngsters look up to.
Fast forwarding to the present scenario, times have changed and so have method of teaching. Today apart from teachers’ technology also has become part of teaching and how knowledge is imparted. However, this has led to asituation where students have expressed that course materials thatcould be seen on the computers were distracting. Today although most students use technology in their classrooms to keep up with theircourse but it made them get bored easily and they felt less engaged in the classroom.
The use of technology though is useful for providing accessible education but even teachers feel that it becomes distracting for them as well. Students feel thatthe teachers should be more entertaining and engaging so that they donot get distracted by the use of technology. While one part of this rings true however, it is not always possible for a teacher to add entertainment value while teaching in the class. Nevertheless, wecannot deny the fact that when a teacher is dynamic and knowledgeable he/she can make classes interesting enough for the students. The need is for the teachers to be really passionate towards their profession.
We cannot totally keep technology away from the classes as the world has changed and so hasthe methods of studying. We find fewer students at the library,because everything is available on the internet and students spendlot of time scouring the internet for answers. This is where adynamic, knowledgeable and passionate teacher can make students more attentive in class. A successful teacher is one who can fluidly answer all questions and clarify their doubts. There are some brilliant teachers who make their lectures in class so lucid, interesting and engaging that students make sure they do not miss those classes.
