Windows to Save Solar Energy
Editorials News | Feb-25-2017
With the growing need to find clean, renewable sources of energy, the new technology of energy-saving windows is a huge breakthrough. Researchers have developed windows, called photovoltaic windows that can store solar energy in cells.
This has been made possible by embedding silicon nano particles into luminescent solar concentrators (LSCs). These LSCs collect solar energy. But how does this actually happen? When light passes through these photovoltaic windows, useful frequencies are captured and stored inside the solar cells arranged at the edges of the windows.
The designing of these windows is such that it doesn’t spoil the aesthetic appeal of the building, a huge barrier that technologies often face during implementation. These windows do not have massive structures and thus, blend effortlessly into the frame.
There have been many technologies created in the past decades that aim at capturing solar energy. But what sets this technology aside is the use of silicon nano particles. Previous technologies used either toxic elements or rare substances. This affected wide-scale implementation. Silicon, on the other hand, is available abundantly. It is non-toxic and absorbs light at different frequencies.
