“Youthquake” A New Word in Oxford Dictionary

Youthquake means “a significant cultural, political, or social change arising from the actions or influence of young people.” Casper Grathwohl, Oxford President of Dictionaries said that they chose this word on the bases of evidence and linguistic interest. It reflects deepening unrest and exhausted nerves in the language, this is a rare political word which sounds like a hope that creates an open mind set which can be seen ahead in future.

UK increased the use of this word by 2016, by a huge spike. To build the place for the word British polls were needed. The word was mainly used in New Zealand in the parliament elections. Australians noticed this word when voted on marriage equality. As the British youth was changing in terms of fashion and music, so now this word gives a specific context.

There were some more words which were include in oxford dictionary -

  • Antifa - a short word for "anti-fascist.”
  • Broflake- meaning a man who is readily upset or offended by progressive attitudes that conflict with his more conservative views.
  • Kompromat - the Russian term for compromising information collected for use in blackmailing.
  • Unicorn - adding rainbow colours to things, especially food.
  • Milkshake duck - a person or character on social media that appears to be endearing at first, but is found to have an unappealing back story.
