Creating A Learner-Centered Classroom

Editorials News | Aug-30-2018

Creating A Learner-Centered Classroom
  • Get to Know the Learners: It is essential as teachers that you should know your students' interests, what they love to do, what they want to learn about and what comes easily to them. Only after knowing answers to these basic questions will you able to provide them with a authentic, participatory and relevant learning experiences. It is important that you have insights on what they need instead of assuming that you know what they need.

  • Design The Space Together: The classroom should feel like it's everyone's and not just the tutor. It is important that the students feel ownership when they enter the classroom. This will make them more comfortable, interactive and help in the learning process. You should ask the students to design the classroom. This will not only give them a sense of ownership but also help them learn some amazing skills.
  • Create Community Agreements: A commitment to positive values can never be built upon short-term change in the behaviour of the students by threatening them or bribing them. We need rules that will help in developing productive learning environments where students feel valued. Fostering community based agreements is much better for the classroom environment to facilitate long-term change.
  • Learn to Work Together: Instead of managing our students, we should focus more on thinking for themselves. We shouldn't expect them to follow obedience but instead develop procedures that will help them solve complex problems. They should start to work with others so as to create opportunities to develop and learn.
