In the present day and age, no one can deny the significance of digital technology as people already are surrounded by it. It ranges from social networking sites and banking systems all the way to learning institutions and workplaces, among others. With the expansion of technology, it has become so significant for people to be smart while they are dealing with technology. This is where the phenomenon of ‘digital citizenship’ is applicable and why it is gradually being included in the curriculum in many schools and universities today.

What is Digital Citizenship?

Digital citizenship is defined as the proper interaction with the society where the technology is used by the citizens. It covers many areas of concern, such as cyber security, handling technology, appropriate use, and user’s freedom and responsibilities in cyberspace. It is important for someone to become a responsible citizen in the virtual space, this person is obedient, sees the consequences of his actions, and does not violate the rights of others.

Digital citizenship, or simply put, citizenship in cyberspace important for the following reasons:

One of the most significant aspects is an aspect related to the promotion of digital citizenship. Currently, with the incidences of cyberbullying, fake news, hacking, and excessive use of technology, people are required to be taught how to use them wisely.

Here are a few reasons why digital citizenship is crucial:

Online Safety:
The Internet is filled with risk factors such as fraud, theft of identity, and sexual predators. It is very significant for the students to know how to safeguard oneself, and how to identify tricks on the Internet.

Ethical Use of Technology:
In the triadic relationship between man, the State, and technology, it becomes increasingly important to comprehend the ethical dimension of a given digital act. This includes being wary of Plagiarism and piracy and being careful of the marks one leaves on the digital world.

Combatting Misinformation:
Critical thinking, which denies real news from fake news, is very vital, especially with the many sources of information available. Digital citizenship education assists people to be able to determine the credibility of information found in the Internet.

Promoting Positive Digital Interaction:
The directly related consequence of Using the Internet is anonymity, which in turn may lead to the production of negative conduct like cyberbullying. Digital citizenship promotes civil and constructive interaction, which is helpful for the formation of a better environment over the Internet.

With Generation X glued to computers and smartphones, mastering skills on how to use computers responsibly will enable one to be an informed world citizen.

Adapting Integration of Digital Citizenship in the Curriculum
