Editorials News | Aug-17-2018
Fantasy Sport isn't a new phenomenon. Since World War II the concept of choosing players and running a contest based on their year to date statistics have been making rounds. The "Fantasy Baseball" league first began in Boston in 1960. Sociologist William Gamson from Harvard University started the “Baseball Seminar" where he and his colleagues would create rosters that earned points on the final standings of the player's batting average.
How does one play the Fantasy Hockey?
In 1995, with the rise of internet a very popular fantasy Hockey website came into existence, which was released by Molson Breweries. What it did was the website allowed visitors to register their accounts and participate in Hockey leagues. The website had nine teams and the visitor would be the General Manager for one of the team. What a General Manager could do is draft a team from a pool of National Hockey League players; he could also negotiate trades with the other teams present in the league. It is an online game where one gets to assemble a virtual team of real life players of any professional sports. As there are several teams in the Pool, a person who logs in to play creates or drafts his team from the pool based on the actual players’ statistical performance in real time game. The performance of the real players is converted into points, compiled and totaled according to how the "Manager" selected his team.
