Health is wealth. To be in good health is immensely important for one and all. The most important is to stay healthy in one’s old age. We often see people doing financial planning for their retirement, but we hardly see anyone doing health planning for their retirement. Kaiser Health news has come up with a 10 step program for motivated seniors to maintain good health during their old age. These are:
(i) Buy great sneakers – The first and the most important step is to buy a pair of good quality sneakers. Start with a mild walk in the morning and slowly increase the duration of your walk. Always place your shoes near the front door.
(ii) Practice your balance – Balance is very important for the physical well being of an individual. Stand on one leg and close your eyes. Remain in that position for nearly 30 seconds.
(iii) Improve your breakfast – Avoid the intake of sugars in your meal. Substitute sweets with seasonal fruits, almond milk and protein powder or a protein patty without sugars. Also replace soda with seltzer water.
(iv) De-stress wisely – Do not take excess of stress. Indulge and adopt different methods of reducing stress such as yoga, meditation etc.
(v) Practice resistance training – In old age we often see that people lose weight and become very slim. In order to avoid such a condition, one must indulge in resistance training by lifting dumbbells or barbells or using weight machines.
(vi) Hit the floor- For those rushing towards old age, maintaining flexibility in the body is very crucial. Such people must practice by getting down to the floor and then standing up again. If they won’t practice, then after sometime their body may become stiff.
(vii) Challenge your speed – In the old age, people do not really care about their speed. It is great for a person heading towards old age to keep challenging his/ her own speed.
(viii) Believe in yourself – Most important of all the exercises is to believe in your own self. One must not have a feeling of doubt for his own self. Everyone likes to be around a confident person.
(ix) Tackle a project- Pick up something that is of your interest. It may be writing a book, getting involved in social work in an NGO or something else.
(x) Embrace self-improvement – Make self improvement a part of your life. Adopt self improvement techniques and keep growing intellectually till your last breath.
