International Day of the Cats

The International Cat Day is an annual Global event that celebrates the bond between cats and humans. This event was created in 2002 by the International Fund for Animal Welfare to mark a day for the Cat and human bonding.

Cats and human beings have a close relation that is thousands of years old, 10,000 year to be precise.

While unearthing archaeological sites in East Egypt the remains of cats were found, and the DNA analysis matched that of the cats we have in our homes today. It was found that the modern domesticated cats are the descendants of the Felis Silvestris lybica, a type of wild cat that roamed the wilderness of the North Africa and the Western Asia thousands of years ago.

While cats today are brought into homes today due to their cuteness and providing companionship but thousands of years ago man and cats shared a very mutual benefit. The cats were drawn towards the farms and the farmers were happy to have them around as the cats kept the mice and rat populations in control. The wild cats benefited from the endless supply of food and slowly became accustomed to having human around them. This mutual relationship further bonded when the farmers started taking their new found feline friends to other locations along with them.

At a later stage cats became travel companions when they were taken aboard ships to keep the rodent population in check.

Though we have moved away from agricultural based societies to more industrial developments but the bond between humans and cats have not diminished despite the fact that cats actually don’t serve us in any practical way.
