Investment In Institutions By HRD Ministry

The ministry was supposed to pick out 20 IoEs, 10 public and 10 private that will enjoy complete academic as well as administrative autonomy. However, only 6 were chosen for the tag. 6 IoEs named were IIT Delhi, IIT Bombay and IISc Bangalore (public universities) and BITS Pilani, Manipal Global and Jio University (private universities). Now, the committee is all set to take up proposals from 5 more public institutions to consider for the institute of eminence (IoE) status.

The universities namely IIT Madras, IIT Kharagpur, Delhi University, Anna University and Jadavpur University: are recommended by Empowered Expert Committee (EEC). The government will provide funds of Rs. 1000 crores to three public institutions in the coming 5 years. Private institutions will not get funding but will benefit from administrative and academic economy. Other institutions recommended for th tag of Special Institutions (not IoE) are IIM Ahmedabad, IIM Kolkata, ICAR Delhi, ISI Kolkata, TIFR Mumbai, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana and TISS Mumbai. It is believed that these institutions have great potential to make their way into national as well global prominence in a single field of study such as medicine, technology, management etc. and some of them have already shown signs of global stature in their respective fields. The committee believes that if their revenue sources are not diversified, they might rely on student fees and suffer to invest in excellence.
