Metacognition

Let’s first understand what we mean by "cognitive". Cognitive means relating to the mental process involved, while trying to know about something, or while learning and understanding the things that we learn.

So what is Metacognition?

Metacognition is the process of thinking about what we are thinking. It is a process to develop our self-awareness and assess our own self. It is our thoughts and contemplation about our own education and learning, it could be our learn9ng from the past, present as well as our future.

Metacognition is ones awareness and the ability to regulate or channelize the thinking process to become more "aware of one's own awareness”. It is a higher order of thinking. It is the way of planning how to approach a given learning task, monitoring one's comprehension of the task, and evaluating own progress at the end of the task.

There are four stages of Metacognition; Planning, Monitoring, Evaluation and Reflection. During the Planning Phase the learners think about the goal that has been set by the teacher, how to approach the task at hand, strategize. The second phase is the monitoring phase where learners implement their plan and also monitor their individual progress in addressing the task. The third phase is the Evaluation Phase where learners try to evaluate the progress made by the choice of their strategies. Reflection is the fundamental part of the entire three Plans, Monitor Evaluate.

Every individual has a different way of processing their thoughts. There are majorly four different types of learners, the Tacit Learner, The Aware Learners, The Strategic Learners and The Reflective Learners.
