Modi Government Wishes To Keep Quota In Teaching Jobs Intact

Lately, a judgment of the honorable Supreme Court of India has ruled that quota in the faculty positions will be calculated according to the departments and not on the basis of the total no. of posts in a university. HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar has stated that the government is determined to protect the reservation in teaching jobs. The ministry is keen to approach the Supreme Court of India requesting it to review its decision. He further stated that the order of the University Grants Commission of July 2018, has not been withdrawn.

The order had put a hold upon the recruitment of new teachers. This means that the universities cannot conduct the process of faculty recruitment until the government’s review petition is not disposed off by the apex court. He stated that the government is confident that they will get justice and that reservation shall be done only on the basis of the 200 point roster. The government will make sure that nothing goes wrong and the concept of reservation for the SCs, STs and OBCs remains intact. A Special Leave Petition (SLP) was filed by the Centre which challenged the order of the Allahabad High Court. On January 22, the SLP was rejected by a bench of judges namely Justices U Lalit and Indira Banerjee. The SLP was filed after a political furore over the University Grants Commission’s March 5 order of the same year, stating that the number of reserved faculty posts in universities and colleges shall be calculated on the basis of the departments and not on the basis of aggregate vacant posts. The order of UGC dated March 5, 2018, was in response to a decision of the Allahabad High Court of April 2017.
