The Transformation of Schools – Urgent Need

We all believe that our children are in the best environment when they are in school. But is that really true? If we see and observe the children of today around us, all that we would notice in them is the lack of empathy, kindness and care. We often see children getting easily frustrated and angry these days over small issues.

They become egoistic and act inhumanly with their classmates. Indeed schools have a significant role to play in this regard. But are the schools really fulfilling their duty? Hardly any schools imbibe such etiquettes in the students, except for only a few with enlightened teachers. If we do not take a step in this regard presently, we would be responsible for intentionally raising such individuals who are selfish, unkind, inhuman and egoistic, resulting into a heartless society. The need of the hour is to transform the schools and restructure all essential aspects such as: curriculum, teacher preparation and management, investment in physical resources, assessment, administrative and governance culture, leadership, and more. There is immediate need for turning schools into the temples of India with the constitutional values as the sacred good, tapping in to the endless reservoir of generosity that children have. We need to understand that our children are the future of tomorrow. What we teach them today, is what they will practice in the times to come. As it is the crime rate in India is on the peak, a more heartless and inhuman world would destroy the very idea of humanity in India. There is requirement for initiatives in this regard such as one carried on by Anurag Behar, chief executive officer of Azim Premji Foundation who leads the sustainability initiatives for Wipro Ltd.
