Tsunamis Can Be Halted before Hitting Earth’s Shoreline
Editorials News | Feb-16-2017
Through a research, the scientists have come to a conclusion that lives could ultimately be saved by using acoustic-gravity waves (AGWs) against tsunamis.
A research led by Dr Usama Kadri from Cardiff University's School of Mathematics demonstrated how tsunamis are triggered by earthquakes, landslides and other violent geological events.
AGWs are naturally occurring sounds waves that move through the deep ocean at the speed of sound and can travel thousands of meters below the surface.
The scientists stated that AGWs can calculate tens or even hundreds of kilometers in length and it is believed that certain life forms such as plankton.
According to the researchers, plankton can swim against a current. Moreover, plankton relies on the waves to aid their movement. Acoustic-gravity waves enhance the plankton’s ability to find food.
Dr. Kadri has claimed that if we can find a way to engineer these waves, they can be fired at an incoming tsunami. The scientists have advised that these waves should be engineered in such a way that can reduce its amplitude, or height, and cause its energy to be dissipated over a large area.
