Editorials News | Jan-10-2019
It is famously said that a teacher is like a candle that burns itself to give light to its students. The profession of a teacher is indeed a noble profession. Imparting quality education is an important task that a teacher performs. Education is the factor on which the future of India depends, therefore it is a very crucial subject that should be taken care of. 12 great rules of teaching are as follows
(i) Start small – We all know that anything that grows big, was once small. So is the case with curriculum, relationships, portfolios etc. A teacher must go forward slowly.
(ii) Embrace that there is no one way – A teacher must believe and understand that there is no one perfect way of doing a particular thing. A teacher shall have to adopt different ways and strategies of effective teaching in the classroom. Sometimes, she may have to stick to the traditional methods of teaching whereas at other times, she may have to opt for the modern ways such as scenario based teaching, project based teaching etc.
(iii) Trust the people around you – Always build a sense of trust in the people around you, be it your students, your colleagues, and your parents.
(iv) In learning, curiosity is everything – If a student is not curious to know what happens next or maybe if the student is not curious in applying what you teach to their real lives, your teaching is a waste. A teacher must teach in such a way that it makes the student curious to know more and more about the subject.
(v) Experiment. Experiment. Experiment. – A teacher must be fearless. He/ She must be open to experiments. She should allow and encourage her students to experiment in the best possible way. Experimenting in the laboratory, or in real life. A teacher should make the students understand that experimenting will help them explore more and new things about the subject.
(vi) Do not always start planning with a standard – It is not always important to start planning with a standard always. A teacher can start with technology, or may be curriculum or something else.
(vii) Teaching is always changing – Teaching is dynamic in nature. It is not static. It keeps changing with time. The teacher has to be flexible enough to keep making use of diverse and modern ways of teaching as and when required.
(viii) Be concise – A teacher must always be to the point and not unnecessarily elaborative.
(ix) Know your pedagogy – A teacher must know the difference between confusing and complex, differentiation and personalized learning, project based learning and learning through projects.
(x) Help students ask great questions – Always allow your students to speak, interact and ask questions as and when need be. They should not be scared of you while putting up a question.
(xi) Be interesting – Being predictable is being boring in the classroom. Always be unpredictable. That will make it more interesting for the students.
(xii) It is not about you – Always remember that it is the students classroom. You are there for the students. Never become the centre of attention.
